NZ Mobile Internet and NZ Internet Usage – Few use cellphones to surf the net (Orly?)
In the Herald article today: Few use cellphones to surf the net by Simon Hendery.
It highlights the fact that:
- Research company Perceptive polled 1000 New Zealanders and found 91 per cent do not use their mobile phone to access the internet.
- 72 per cent of New Zealanders have used a credit card to shop online in the past six months.
- A “very impressive” 83 per cent said they used internet banking services.
- An acceptance, and high local usage of, social media including blogs and networking platforms such as Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.
- Facebook is used by 58 per cent of New Zealanders, including 38 per cent of those aged over 65.
- The survey found 6 per cent of New Zealanders were regularly tweeting (higher than US’ 5%).
- In New Zealand Twitter is now more popular than LinkedIn, a business-focused social networking platform which, according to the survey, is used by 3 per cent of the population.
However, the article/survey may be suffering from the following:
- Data sample is arguably very small (only 1000 respondents, demographics not clarified) – I am personally sceptical about the accuracy.
- The surfing-capable handset ownership is not clarified (this may be crucial considering the ownership rate is unknown and may range from common to very rare among the general population and especially the study respondents).
- Should the handset ownership be uncommon among the 1000 respondents then it indicates the possible barriers:
- Technological barrier (few feel the needs to surf via mobiles due to…:perception of slowness? too gimmicky? not the time yet? viewing limitation? simply no need?)
- Cost barrier (handset price? data cost?)
- Market barrier (availability of mobile-friendly websites?)
- If the handset ownership is not uncommon then it indicates the possible barriers:
- Technological barrier (network capability?)
- Cost barrier (handset price? data cost?)
- Market barrier (availability of mobile-friendly websites?
Has anyone got a different perspective and/or data?
